There seems to be primarily two types of systems that DIY-ers like to build: gaming rigs and home theater PCs (HTPCs). Often there can be some overlap as to the functionality of these two system types; but high-end gaming rigs are usually too big and noisy to reside in a living room and HTPCs are usually too underpowered to play modern games at high resolutions and settings and still maintain high framerates.
